Introduction of Qinghai High Altitude Medical Research Academy
(Former Qinghai High altitude Heart Disease Research Institute)
Qinghai High Altitude Medical Research Academy is only a specialized high altitude medicine agency at present in china, studying high altitude basic and clinical medical science. It was founded in October of 1978; the former was Qinghai High Altitude Heart Disease Institute, in October of 1984, renamed again as Qinghai High Altitude Medical Research Institute. In May of 2002, the institute was nominated by Qinghai Public Health Bureau as Qinghai High Altitude Medical Research Academy with "the program of incorporating the high altitude medical resource in Qinghai province". In 1987, the first high altitude medical and physiological symposium was held in Xining, Qinghai, and the high altitude medical branch of Chinese Medical Association was established. A national journal named "Journal of High Altitude Medicine" was founded and published. The journal will own a good base of high altitude medicine for future.
Among 280 employees in the whole, 250 medical members, 1 academician of Chinese Engineering Academy, 2 as the special engaged professors of ministry of public health, and 30 professors and vice professors.

After the reformation of health system in Qinghai in April of 2000, the academy was consisted of the medical research and clinical department, the heart and thoracic surgery, cardiovascular medicine, high altitude disease, hypertension, anesthesia, emergency center and medical technical department in the clinical section, the medical research section is a laboratory center which has been nominated as a key laboratory of high altitude diseases by Health Ministry. All research subjects include the respiratory and cardiovascular physiology, epidemiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology and phytochemistry etc.

The academy owns many modernized equipments, such as digital image and vascular angiography, SPECT, helix CT, color Doppler for heart, automatic biochemistry assay instrument, 24 hrs electrocardiographic monitoring appearance, cardiopulmonary function monitor system, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the greatest hypo- and hyper-baric oxygen chamber in China etc. These advanced equipments are playing a more and more important role in the basic research, health protection and cardiovascular disease cure and prevention of high altitude medicine.

During the past 20 years, Qinghai High Altitude Medical Research Academy has been developing constantly. It is in charge of dozens of key subjects of medical scientific research, carrying out five synthetic surveys of high altitude medicine and taking part in the Cocoxili science expedition organized by the national science committee. These high altitude medical science research has acquired greater results, there were 30 scientific achievements to be own in country, ministry and province level, 50 in bureau level under the effort of whole scientific and technologic workers in this academy. Meanwhile more than 160 medical articles have published in national core journals, more than 20 articles award the outstanding prize. Some scientific achievements have reached and exceeded the international advance level and interested the attention of expert professors over world. And prof. Wu tianyi has held a position of academician of Chinese Engineering Academy and the director of International Society of High Altitude Medicine.

Medical science exchange and cooperation
Qinghai High Altitude Medical Research Academy pays great attention to strengthen the exchange and cooperation between the international as well as over country. Now, in the world, we have established the medical scientific exchange and research cooperation with many countries, such as U.S.A., Japan, Russia, Kirghiz Republic, Peru, Australia, Poland, Bolivia, etc. In china, the academy established many long term cooperation relations with famous Chinese Academy of Science, Shanghai Life Science Center (former Physiological Institute of Shanghai), Basic science Institute of Medical Science Academy, Cardiovascular Disease Research Institute, the Third and Fourth Institute of Military Medical Science Academy of China, the Third Military Medical University, High Altitude Disease Institute of Xingjiang Military Command, Bejing Fuwai Hospital, Bejing Anzhen Hospital etc. The greatest interest was stimulated to professors and experts in whole world by the research results of Qinghai High Altitude Medical Research Academy, the unique plateau geographic condition and population; the leading position of this academy in the high altitude medical circle has been established. At present, there are two international high altitude medical collaborative projects to being performed between two government: (a) " sensitivity of hypoxic ventilation on population at high altitude" and "study of sleep respiratory statues at high altitude", which are cooperated with the National Medical Physiological Institute of Poland. (b) "Mechanism of hypoxic adaptation in high altitude native animals" which is cooperated with Shinshu University and Fukui Medical University of Japan. These subjects are of a stage of results.

Main medical researches and results
Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is the greatest nature laboratory of high altitude medical research in whole world. Specially, having the native population (Tibetans) and animals. They have been a high altitude adapted group with special gene by geographic and reproductive isolate factor and long term nature selection.

(a) Adaptation of high altitude hypoxia: The mechanism of high altitude hypoxic adaptation was studied from general organs and tissues to cells and molecular level by the comparison between Han immigrants and native Tibetans as well as animals. The results, which have an important affects in international medicine, demonstrated that the Tibetans have the best adaptation to high altitude hypoxia in plateau population in the world. The adaptation is greatly formed by histological changes i.e. the oxygen utilization is more efficiency and complete.

(b) High altitude disease studies: The pathogenesis and the changes of acute mountain sickness show generally clear understand through the national Cocoxili science expedition, Sino-Japanese unite science survey in Mt.Anemaqin and high altitude pulmonary edema study, and a number of mountain medical survey. The systemic study of high altitude polycythemia has finished during "9th-five year plan" and the results filled the gap in this research field in our country. On the basis of a wealth of data of mountain sickness research in native and immigrant residents as well as builders at high altitude, the nomenclature, the classification and the diagnostic criteria of mountain sickness have been certified in china. The certification makes for the health protection and treatment of mountain sickness under high altitude hypoxic condition. And it will result in a higher academic and applying value.

(c) Prevention and therapy of mountain sickness: Firstly, for prevent the incidence of mountain sickness, with the pathogenesis pattern was comprehended by us, we also do the health guidance for the high altitude population. Secondly, no efficient treatment for high altitude disease in the world now, we are developing the comprehensive study to prevent and treat this disease by Chinese traditional medicine and Tibetan medicine, specially the Rhodiola, which has an age-old applying history in Tibet, has been developed into a systemic study including phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology up to now in our academy.

(d) Clinical study of cardiovascular diseases at high altitude: It is an important studying aspects for prevention and treatment of high altitude cardiovascular disease, because that the disease has a significant diagnostic and therapeutic feature, which is difference to the sea level, under the high altitude hypoxic condition. We have own generally the medical knowledge of high altitude cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, congenital heart disease, cor pulmonale and other kinds of heart disease at high altitude, including research of epidemiology, pathogenesis, pathology and clinical diagnosis-treatment using to guide medical care practice

(e) In these two years, the academy is developing more and more medical work in order to open the west and build the Qinghai-tibetan railway line. Such as for preventing mountain sickness and advancing the plateau builders' health level, we have held the training classes about high altitude medicine and are acquiring a good economical and social effects; researched and provided the health care drink and emergency medical boxes, and sent medical serve to the railway line for therapy and guidance on-the-spot. All the serves were confirmed to be good value by railway ministry. In addition, many experts and professors write a number of popular science books and articles for high altitude builders and medical workers.
